Traffic jams (1) can be relieved (5) if vehicles (2) reduce their speed (3) below the currently possible value (4). For this purpose, vehicles (6) are counted during a counting interval (7) in order to derive a waiting time (8) in relation to the time (9) required by the vehicles to pass the region (10) of the potential traffic jam. The target speed (3) is obtained by dividing the waiting time (8) by the section (11) or by the driving time (12). If the actual speed (13) is greater than the target speed (3), a lower value (14) than the target speed is transferred to a speed-regulating device (15). If the actual speed is too low, a higher value is transferred. The speed is controlled at a plurality of potential traffic jam regions. The vehicles obtain equivalence values. Allowance is made for fluctuations in traffic flow at intersections. Differences in speed between sections are reduced by the process. Additional control sections are employed in peak traffic. The speed-regulating devices also influence the energy supply and the direction of motion. Vehicles are diverted if this results in shorter driving times. Aircraft obtain individual waiting time values, which they reduce in function of flight time, and are released for takeoff only if this does not cause additional major traffic jams.
|
