PURPOSE: To selectively convert methane at a high conversion rate to ethane and ethylene by forming a catalyst from a mixed basic metal oxide expressed by a specific general formula, thereby reacting methane and oxygen in the presence of this catalyst. CONSTITUTION: The mixed basic metal oxide catalyst expressed by formula I (A denotes an alkaline metal, such as lithium, sodium, potassium, rubidium and cesium; B denotes cation having an ionization state 1 larger than the ionization state of C; x=0.002 to 0.25, y=0.001 to 0.25 when 2=1; (q) denotes the number necessary for maintaining the charge equil. with oxygen) is formed. The gas contg. methane is subjected to oxidative coupling with oxygen in the presence of the catalyst expressed by formula I, by which hydrocarbon of a high mol.wt. is produced.
