A process for producing a jellyfish photoprotein aequorin in a mammalian cell system, the gene of which, when used as an expression gene marker, makes a high sensitivity detection possible by measuring a faint-luminescence activity in a non-radioisotope system, which process comprises cloning gene pAQ440 specifying the biosynthesis of a jellyfish photoprotein aequorin into an expression vector plasmid of a mammalian cell system, subjecting the resulting plasmid to transfection and producing the photoprotein aequorin in the mammalian cell.
