PURPOSE:To reduce a content of CO in a reaction gas produced for the fuel of a fuel cell by filling a CO conversion catalyst in a part of reaction tubes in an apparatus wherein feed gas is passed through a reforming catalyst bed in a reaction tube heated by a fuel gas and having a double tube structure. CONSTITUTION:In a reaction tube 2, an internal and an external annular spaces 9, 8 separated by a vertical separating cylinder 5 and communicated at their foot ends are formed by an external tube 6 and an internal tube 7 disposed concentrically to both sides of the cylinder 5 and communicated with each other apart from the cylinder 5 at the foot ends of the cylinder 5. A reforming catalyst 12 is filled in a lower half section of the spaces 9, 8, heat conducting grains 22 are filled in the upper half section of the space 8, and a CO conversion catalyst 25 is filled in the upper half section of the space 9. The catalyst bed 12 is heated by the fuel gas fed from a burner 3, and reaction gas is obtd. by feeding feed gas for reforming through an inlet 16 and flowing the gas through each space 8, 9 downward and upward respectively. H2 and CO2 are formed from CO and steam in the reaction gas by the effect of the catalyst 25. Thus, the concn. of CO functioning as catalytic poison of the electrode of a fuel cell is reduced, and a load for a CO converter in a succeeding stage is also reduced. |
