PURPOSE:To advantageously obtain the subject high-purity compounds useful as a raw material, etc., for resins with facilitated operation using economical oxygen without using a solvent, by oxidizing phenols in a molten state in the liquid phase with an oxygen-containing gas in the presence of a specific catalyst, then cutting off the above-mentioned gas and heat-treating the reaction product. CONSTITUTION:Phenols as a raw material in a molten state are oxidized in the liquid phase using metallic complexes as a catalyst while introducing an oxygen-containing gas. The oxidation reaction is carried out at 130-220 deg.C, preferably at 160-200 deg.C. After cutting off introduction of the oxygen-containing gas, heat treatment is carried out at a temperature about 10-30 deg.C higher than the temperature at which the oxidation reaction is carried out to afford the aimed compounds. The reaction is preferably carried out by cutting off the oxygen- containing gas while introducing a nonoxidizing gas, such as nitrogen gas. Furthermore, the central metallic ions of the afore-mentioned metallic complexes are a transition metal and the ligand is preferably cyclic polydentate ligand, dimethylglyoximato or polydentate Schiff base compound. |
