[Also in Group I] Apparatus for agitating a liquid or a suspension comprises a tank having a number of parallel horizontal ribbon-like agitating members 15, which may be slats, bars, ropes or the like, and which can be vertically reciprocated. As shown, the agitators are carried on crossbars 18a, 19a suspended from arms 16, 17 oscillated on shafts 18, 19 by a double-acting hydraulic jack 24. The members 15 are tensioned as by a turnbuckle 23 and are arranged in the direction of flow of the liquid between the inflow 11 baffled at 12 and the outflow weir 13 to a settling tank 14. The members 15 may be twisted at their outflow ends to reduce the agitating effect, see Fig. 3 (not shown). Instead of being tensioned they may hang in a catenary and scrape the bottom of the tank, see Fig. 4 (not shown); they may have attached scraping members, see Fig. 5 (not shown). They may be raised clear of the liquid to the chain-dotted position of Fig. 1. Additional ribbon members 33 may extend between the bars 18, 18a to increase mixing when a chemical flocculating agent is added to the inflow, and similar members between the bars 19, 19a to raise the flow towards the weir 13. There may be a sludge sump 35. In an alternative arrangement, the ribbon members are transverse to the direction of flow and are adjusted to give maximum agitation at the influent end, progressively decreasing in the direction of flow. The apparatus may be used for treating sewage. |
