A machine for applying a wire around a parcel comprises a frame 3 guiding the wire which is fed through rollers 7, 8, the roller 7 being driven by a reversible pneumatic motor, a tiltable wire clamp 9 receiving the leading end of the wire after it has passed around frame 3, a further clamp 6 tensions the wire about the parcel, the machine having an electric and pneumatic control system which includes a master valve energized from a main switch to control the flow of compressed air to valves and jacks for operating the machine. In operation, the end of the wire, after passing around the frame, tilts clamp 9 to operate valve 12 causing the clamp to close, a switch 10 is also closed. A starter switch is then pressed to start the tying operation. Firstly, a set of rollers on table 2 on which the parcel moves are retracted; small cylinders 4 on the frame open the guiding track to release the wire and clamp 9 is released; the pneumatic motor is reversed to withdraw the wire. Clamp 9 tilts in the opposite direction against a leaf spring to operate switch 10 to close the clamp 6 which is moved by jack 32 to tension the wire. Clamp 9 is now closed and a block 13 having a pinion 21 with a slot, is moved by cylinder 18 to place the slot over the wire ends, a switch 19 operated by block 13 releases clamp 6 which returns to its normal position. Block 13 closes a switch 20 causing a cylinder 25 to move a rack 23 to rotate pinion 21 through gear 22 to twist the wire ends. The rack closes a switch 27 causing the small cylinders 4 to be exhausted and allowing springs to close the wire track. On return movement of rack 23, cutter 29 severs the wire and a cam 30 releases a valve 31 to cause the opening of clamp 9 and the withdrawal of block 13 so closing switch 19 and opening switch 20 to raise the table rollers and operate a valve to allow the motor to feed wire into the machine. The main switch can be operated to stop or start the machine. Details of the control system are given in Figs. 3, 3a, 3b (not shown).
