Material having excellent high temperature characteristics, consists by wt.% of 2.5-34.0 Ti, 3.7-64.0 Zr and/or Hf, 0.01-1.3 O, 0.8-9.3 C, 0.1-3.3 N and 1-18 Mo and/or at least 1 or 1-5 Fe, Ni and Co and balance W with incidental impurities it satisfies the atomic relationship: Tix [(Zr, Hf)yW1-x-y .[OuNvC1-u-v z (where x/(x+y)=0.3- 0.8, x+y=0.3-0.8, u=0.005-0.1 and z=0.2-0.7, and it has a fine double hard phase of mainly Ti and Zn and/or Hf compounds and binder phase of mainly W. Material has high hardness, high toughness and excellent oxidation resistance at high temperature and is capable of high speed cutting.
