PURPOSE: To use a specific 1,4-disubstituted piperidinyl compound such asα- phenyl-1-(2-phenethyl)-4-piperidinemethanol as a therapeutic agent for insomnia. CONSTITUTION: The amount of a compound of the formula (R<1> to R<4> are each H, a 1-6C alkyl, halogen, CF3 , OH, a 1-6C alkoxy or NH2 , pref. R<3> =R<4> =H; (n) is 2, 3 or 4, pref. 2 or 3, esp. 2) known as a serotonin 5HT2 antagonist, or pharmaceutically permissible acid-added salt thereof, enough for hypnotization (normally, a daily dose of 0.1-10mg/kg) is administered to a patient affected by insomnia so as to treat (mitigate or remove) the insomnia. The above compound can be formulated into diversified forms such as tablets, capsules, solution, elixir, sterile solution for injection or sustained release preparation.
