The present invention relates to a local communications network having a layered architecture, consisting of N stations, N >/= 2, transmitting and receiving. Each of the stations 11 is linked by an attachment cable 12 to an attachment unit 13. These attachment units are connected to one another, in series, by a transmission medium 14 thus constituting a ring. The transmission medium includes a unidirectional data transmission path Vd and a signalling path Vs. Each of the attachment units includes means which, on the one hand, when the station is passive (power off) disconnect the said station from the ring, and on the other hand, when the said station is active (power on) insert the said station into the ring, via the attachment cable. The present invention implements, in the relevant local network, means and methods of access to the transmission medium which are identical in each of the stations, enabling the active stations to access the transmission medium in a simultaneous, conflict-free and controlled manner, in accordance with a multiplexing protocol. <IMAGE>
