PURPOSE:To improve purifying efficiency for exhaust emission without power drop of an engine by providing a ceramic series catalytic converter in the downstream side of a metallic series catalytic converter in an engine arranging a plurality of catalytic converters in series. CONSTITUTION:On the way of an exhaust pipe 10 in the downstream side of a supercharger 8, a first step catalytic converter 12 and on its downstream side a second step catalytic converter 14 are provided. The first step catalytic converter 12 has a metallic catalytic body 22 carrying wash coat (Al2O3, etc.) and catalytic metal (Pt, Rh, etc.) on a metallic carrier which consists of flat plates 16 and waved plates 18 made of heat resistance steel, piled, assembled, and wound in spiral, and is constructed so that this metallic catalytic body is held within a case 24. Besides the second step catalytic converter 14 consists of monolith type ceramic series having many square shaped flow holes for exhaust gas, has a ceramic catalytic body 28 carrying catalyzer, and the catalytic body is held in a case 32 through supporting members 30. |
