The invention relates to a method and a machine for unrolling veneer from a log of wood. According to the invention, while the log 2 is rotationally driven about a horizontal axis 3 the cutting blade 5, consisting of an endless belt bearing against the peripheral surface 4 of the log, is given a continuous straight cutting movement which is very fast with respect to the peripheral movement of the log.
