To remove water from a water-containing liquid, in particular from a solvent which contains a small additional amount of water and is used in a cleaning facility for dry cleaning of articles made of cloth, the liquid is passed through a filter apparatus having a filter medium made of a material which absorbs water and retains water in the absorbed state. The water remains in the filter medium and the other liquid which has a lower wetting ability with respect to the filter material flows through the filter material. At the latest when the filter medium is saturated with water, the filter medium is heated so that the water evaporates.
