PURPOSE:To make a liquid crystal display device simpler in structure and higher in contrast by specifying the angle of torsion of the torsional structure of the liquid crystal layer of the device and the angles between the director direction of liquid crystal molecules brought into contact with the electrode base plates and the surfaces of the electrode base plates. CONSTITUTION:The angle of torsion alpha of the torsional structure of the liquid crystal layer 20 and the angles theta0 between the director direction of liquid crystal molecules brought into contact with the surfaces of the electrode base plates 11 and 12 and the surfaces of the base plates 11 and 12 are respectively set to 220-300 deg. and >=25 deg.. In addition, the product DELTAn.d of the magnitude DELTAn of the anisotropy in refractive index of nematic liquid crystal 32 and the thickness (d) of the layer 20 is set to 0.65-0.90mum and the angles beta and gamma between the axes of polarization of a pair of polarizing plates 41 and 42 and the electrode base plates 11 and 12 respectively adjacent to the polarizing plates 41 and 42 in connection with the angle of torsion alpha are made to satisfy Formula I. Therefore, the structure of this liquid crystal display device can be simplified and the contrast of the display can be improved at the time of high-duty ratio multiplex drive. |
