Catalyst for purifying exhaust gases

In a catalyst for purifying exhaust gases, which has a support, a catalyst support layer formed on the support and catalyst components applied to the catalyst support layer, the catalyst support layer is composed of aluminium oxide, cerium oxide, zirconium oxide and at least one oxide of a rare earth metal with the exception of cerium and lanthanum, at least some of the cerium oxide, the zirconium oxide and the oxide of a rare earth metal with the exception of cerium and lanthanum being present in the form of a mixed oxide and/or a solid solution or a mixed crystal. The catalyst for the purification of exhaust gases is able to purify exhaust gases which contain carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and nitrogen oxides (NOx).
