In an apparatus for the intermittent spraying of cutters of a cutting head (10) with cooling liquid, a control valve (19) is formed by a disc connected non-rotatably to the water supply means, the disc having slits (34) extending radially inwards from the circumference of the disc and arranged over a sector angle at the circumference smaller than or equal to 180 DEG , and ducts (30) in the cutting head (10) conned with the disc (19) by connections (28) oriented parallel to the disc and having a contour corresponding substantially to the contour of the slits. The nonrotatable disc (19) is pressable by the cooling liquid pressure into abutment with component (29) which rotates with the head and carries the connections (28) and is mounted slidably in the axial direction, in a particularly simple manner. <IMAGE>
