A process for fusing a steel slab in a longitudinal direction thereof is disclosed, wherein when the steel slab is fused in the longitudinal direction at more than 500 DEG C. and at a speed of more than 300 mm/min., a surface portion of the slab including at least a lower portion of a longitudinally fused surface portion thereof is mechanically removed by cutting or grinding.
