Carbon tetrachloride and perchloroethylene are prepared by the chlorination of a feedstock selected from hydrocarbons and partially chlorinated hydrocarbons having not more than three carbon atoms per molecule by a process which comprises, (a) introducing from 20 to 40% of the feedstock at an initial point of an elongated reactor together with all of the chlorine and with carbon tetrachloride and/or perchloroethylene for the control of reaction temperature, (b) reacting the components as they pass through the elongated reactor, (c) introducing the remainder of the feedstock downstream from the initial point through a plurality of inlets spaced along the elongated reactor; (d) recycling a portion of the product mixture containing carbon tetrachloride and/or perchloroethylene to the initial point in the elongated reactor, and (e) withdrawing the remainder of the mixture as a product. |
