1,140,246. Seaming non-metallic sheet material. PRESSED STEEL FISHER Ltd. 25 July, 1967 [15 Aug., 1966], No. 36452/66. Heading B5K. [Also in Division B3] A method of bonding two workpieces 11, 12 together, e.g. in making a motor vehicle, comprises holding the workpieces in overlapping relationship, providing an apertured cavity 16 between adjacent surfaces of the workpieces, injecting hot-melt adhesive through the aperture 13 to fill the cavity, and allowing the adhesive to cool. Metal or mouldable plastics may be bonded using polyethylene vinyl acetate copolymer resin, nylon-phenolic compositions or polyamides. The cavity 16 may be formed by deforming a portion of one of the workpieces, a protruding or retracted nipple 15 also being formed to facilitate injection of the adhesive by a nozzle 17. The nozzle is fed with molten adhesive at 200-300‹ C. from a lagged reservoir having a thermostatically controlled electrical heater and a powered stirrer, the reservoir being pressurized with nitrogen gas to feed the adhesive through a lagged pipe heated electrically. A piston 19 of the injector may be operated pneumatically, or the adhesive may be pumped mechanically and controlled by a timer. Alternatively, the adhesive may be dispensed from a hand-gun using cartridges of adhesive. In a modification, Fig. 2 (not shown), a hole (22) is formed in one of the workpieces to receive a metal stamping or a synthetic plastics moulding (23) providing the adhesive cavity, the edge (27) of the stamping or moulding overlapping the perforated workpiece. Adhesive cavities may be formed in thick workpieces by machining or moulding. |
