The stethoscope includes two microphones (1) connected to two earpieces. An acoustic model uses conventional acoustic microphones and pipes (2), whilst an electronic model uses electrical microphones and connected wire. The electronic version of the stethoscope may include a stero amplifier acting on the two microphone signals. The microphones are attached to support plates (4), the plates being hinged together. The microphones may slide towards the hinge, or away from it in order to adopt a number of possible positions.
