A non-woven sheet is made by passing an endless band 13 around spaced apart rollers, one of which is driven, applying filaments 55, to the top and bottom surfaces of the band in its lengthwise direction, helically winding other filaments 51 over the longitudinally extending filaments, applying to the filaments a heatcurable resin, at least partially curing the resin, e.g. at 31, removing the cured resin and filaments along the edges of the band, e.g. at 60, whereby the top and bottom lengths of sheets 89, 91 are separated, then removing the separate sheets from the band 13. The resin may be applied to the filaments after they are applied' to the band, e.g. at 59, or before the filaments are wound onto the band. A parting agent, e.g..polyvinyl chloride or polyvinyl alcohol, can be applied to band .13 to assist the release of the filaments and resin therefrom. The resin may be cured whilst it passes around' roller 17. The resin and filaments may be removed from the edges of the band 13 by passing it between vertical driven grinding rollers (61, 63), see Fig. 4 not shown. The metal band 13 may pass through a cleaning station prior to engaging roller 15. The filaments may be made of glass. The resin may be thermosetting.</p> |
