In a process for cracking hydrocarbons to a product including butadiene and butenes, the product is treated in a separation zone to recover separately butadiene and a butene stream, cracking or dehydrogenating the latter and passing the effluent into the same separation zone. The separation zone comprises a combination of flash evaporators and distillation zones with a furfural absorber for the recovery of butadiene. Isobutylene may be separated by an acid absorption step. Preferably butane is separated from at least part of the butene stream to prevent build up. Ethylene is also recovered and propylene may be disproportionated to form further ethylene and butenes.
