The switching controller uses a temp. sensor at the evaporator output for switching in the compressor in dependance on the cooling load. A second sensor monitors the compressor current to allow re-starting of the compressor to be prevented when the compressor current remains above a given value momentarily after the preceding compressor cut- out. Pref. an optical alarm signal is provided by the switching control when the cut-out current is above the given value. Pref. the electric motor for the compressor is controlled via a triac switch supplied with a switching signal by the switching control
