A control system for an electronically controlled transmission (100) with an electronic controller, the controller controls actuation of solenoid actuated valves (630, 634, 636) for controlling the flow of hydraulic fluid to regulate the pressure to and from the friction elements (302, 304) in response to signals from sensors (320, 546) for sensing transmission input and output speeds, a sensor for sensing the power demand on the prime mover (114) and sensors for providing an indication of manually selected mode of transmission operation, the controller causing the transmission (100) to follow a set of predetermined shift schedules, the controller operates in a real time, closed loop manner, and having learning capability for adjusting the actuation of the solenoid-actuated valves (630, 632, 636) in response to prior shift operations. The solenoid actuated valves (630, 632, 634, 636) include a plurality of solenoid valves and a switch valve (610) for enabling two of the friction elements (302, 304) to be controlled from only one of the solenoid valves. |
