<p>A method of making a water-sensitive substrate water-resistant and rigid in the wet state, is disclosed. The substrate is soaked with an aqueous composition comprising a water-soluble alkali silicate, a hardener for the alkali silicate, and a dispersed waxy substance, whereupon the substrate is dewatered and heat-treated. A composition for carrying out this method is also disclosed. The composition is a thermosetting composition comprising water, a water-soluble alkali silicate, a hardener for the alkali silicate, and a waxy substance dispersed in the water.</p> |
