A process for the manufacture of hydrogen sulfide by contacting hydrogen gas (5,6) with sulfur (3,2) at least a portion of which is in a liquid phase in a reactor (1) optionally in the presence of a catalyst. The reaction is preferably performed at a temperature of not lower than 250 DEG C and a pressure of 0,3-30 kg/cm<2> while entrained sulfur vapor is removed from the effluent gas (8) by reaction with freshly supplied hydrogen (13,12) or by condensation in a condensor (7). Condensed sulfur can be recycled (14) to the reactor (1).
