A cartridge ejector for a firearm, especially a small calibre competition firearm, holds the empty casing to be extracted firmly during part of the extraction movement. This part of the extraction movement is completed by positive opening of the cartridge extractor, which allows the casing to fall out. This is in consequence carried out under the influence of the force of gravity, expediently via a slide (50) to the inlet opening (34) of a casing collecting device (30) which is held in the system (10). In consequence, the previously normal side ejection of the casings and the disturbance to the gunner himself and to his neighbouring gunner on the firing post caused by this are prevented. The empty casings can occasionally be emptied from the system all together by removing the casing collecting device (30). <IMAGE>
