The invention relates to a communication system (data bus) which connects various stations having in each case different functions, such as, for example, data processing, input/output or storage functions. According to the invention, a SMART bus (serial multi-access random transfer bus) with multi-master capability is proposed which allows simultaneous access to the data bus by a plurality of master stations, in which each transmitting station has means for occupying the data wire actively with two different voltage levels, the passive state of the transmitting station additionally being used for coding the logic values or the control and format signals, respectively, the passive state being identified by a high electrical impedance of the connection of the station to the data wire.
