The motor has a plurality of independent stator coils 11-15 associated with a common rotor 2 or with separate parts of a rotor. A torque sensor 3 between the motor shaft 21 and an output shaft 22 senses the load on the motor and controls an electric circuit for adjusting the number of stator coils energised to match the load sensed. The torque sensor 3 may as shown comprise interengaging discs 31, 32 which can be circumferentially displaced against the bias of springs 33 to cause shutters 37 to operate photoelectric switches 38. <IMAGE>
