A method and an arrangement for the collection and analysis of dust are proposed, in which dust particles (13) are separated step-wise according to the size from a gaseous carrier medium (15), especially air, by means of an impactor (11) and are subsequently collected on at least one particle trap (14). The dust particles (13) are subsequently examined in an element analysis device (12). The dust particles (13) are held on the surface of the particle trap (14) at up to a prescribed layer thickness. The particle trap (14) carrying the dust particles (13) is subsequently directly used as an X-ray reflector (mirror destination) in a total-reflection X-ray fluorescence analysis device for the analysis of the dust particles (13). <IMAGE>
