<p>The apparatus incorporates a number of flexible filamentary stitch-engaging elements (2 or 12 or 17) arranged side by side in close juxtaposition as an endless row of stitch-engaging elements movable in a direction longitudinally of the row of stitch-engaging elements and positioned so that a portion of the row of stitch-engaging elements projects permanently across the line of stitching (5 or 15) at the sewing position. As sewing proceeds at least one stitch-engaging element is always in place below each stitch as it is formed and is then withdrawn as the work piece advances taking with it the stitch-engaging element thus leaving a gap below the stitch.</p> |
