For recognising and testing coins, according to the method first an identifying self-determination is carried out by means of an inclined running track (1) according to the geometric dimensions and/or the time during which a coin moves forwards over a specific distance of the running track (1). The data of this coin which are acquired thereby are stored in a measurement and/or comparison device and are consulted as a criterion for the comparative testing of a subsequent coin.
