Electrolytic oxidation of chromium salts to the hexavalent state

In a continuous process for the electrolytic oxidation of reduced chromium compounds an aqueous solution of the compounds containing from 3-23% of sulphuric acid is subjected to the action of direct current voltage in a cell equipped with a polytetrahaloethylene membrane (2) having a thickness less than 0.2 ins and a pore diameter of 1-300 microns. The whole is kept at a temperature between 70 deg. and 100 deg.C. Is more durable than ceramic diaphragm cells. Permits long continuous operation at high current densities and efficiencies.
