1,156,348. Thermal regenerators. GENERAL MOTORS CORP. 3 Aug., 1967 [8 Dec., 1966], No. 35746/67. Heading F4K. The matrix 11 of a radial-flow, rotary, thermal regenerator includes an annular, drum-shaped body of porous material 22 having imperforate end rims 21, said body comprising a ring of blocks 27, each of which has a structure which defines a multiplicity of substantially parallel pores extending generally radially with respect to the axis through the drum, circumferentially adjacent pairs of blocks forming a marginal area at the junctions 29 of the blocks in which the pores of at least one of the blocks terminate against the adjacent block, thus providing a dead zone in the matrix which does not permit flow therethrough. The structure of the blocks is made by laying up alternate layers of thin flat ceramic sheet 25 and a corrugated ceramic sheet 26 (see Fig. 5, not shown), the resulting porous material being then fired to provide a unitary slab. As shown in Fig. 4, the matrix is usually formed from two rings of generally parallelogram-shaped blocks 27, the rings abutting along a central plane 28 to form a chevron pattern, with the joints 29 between circumferentially adjacent blocks skewed so that the dead-zones are distributed evenly around the circumference of the matrix.
