Process for the specific synthesis of new thioethers of general formula Z-S-R, having from molecules Z-OH at least one free primary hydroxyl site and comprising the conversion of Z-OH to sulphonate Z-Y, the thioetherification of the latter and then the optional deprotection of hydroxylated sites. These thioethers, in which the radical R contains at least 8 carbon atoms and Z at least 2 free hydroxyl groups, are swelling, gelling, emulsifying and microemulsifying agents.
