Method and device for laying out, on a continuous monotonic timescale, picture and/or sound elements available in a bank 2 of coded elements. The operator scrolls at least one series of elements on a suitable reproduction means 7, in order to constitute documents, and effects the recording, in a memory 18, of codes for referencing the documents. The operator allocates each document a particular index which he selects from a group of predetermined indices and effects the recording in a memory 18 of the index of each document in correspondence with its referencing code, graphical representations appearing on a screen 25 in correspondence with the said continuous monotonic timescale. The operator positions the documents respectively at places which he selects along the said scale and effects the recording, in a memory 20, of linking codes connecting the documents respectively to the continuous monotonic timescale. The operator delimits extracts from the documents linked to the continuous monotonic timescale and effects the recording, in a memory 21, of address codes associated with these extracts. The set of extracts constitutes a layout of pictures and/or sounds, which can be reproduced or copied. <IMAGE>
