PURPOSE:To always provide a moderate action of engine brake by determining the stage number in low speed by the presently used gear stage and the deceleration of a vehicle. CONSTITUTION:A down-shift determining means F inputs car speed information from a car speed detecting means, deceleration information from a deceleration detecting means C, and gear position information from a gear position determining means J. When the present used gear stage is 4th speed and the car speed is within a determined range, the gear is shifted down to 2nd speed if the deceleration is determined value or more, and to 3rd speed if a determined value lower than this or more. On the other hand, when the present used gear stage is 3rd speed and the car speed is within another determined range, the gear is shifted down to 2nd speed if the deceleration is another determined value or more. In this way, the gear is shifted down to the lower low speed stage as the deceleration becomes higher, so that an engine braking force nearly corresponding to the deceleration required by a driver can be obtained. |
