In refuse collection vehicles having a refuse charging system arranged behind the cab, an adjacent refuse compaction device and a refuse collection container arranged behind the latter, it has hitherto been possible to achieve sufficient compaction of the charged refuse within the refuse collection container, so that the refuse collection container is only inadequately utilised. According to the invention, a counter-pressure plate which is mounted on the lid of the refuse collection container to be radially pivotable and can be subject to the action of a compressive force is arranged in the region of action of the refuse compaction device, and forms a counter-pressure element for the charged refuse. As a result, it is possible to compact uniformly the refuse charged into the refuse collection container from the start of refuse charging until the refuse collection container is completely full and thus achieve increased utilisation or payload of the refuse collection vehicle.
