Packaging material, especially containers or parts thereof are sterilized by first spraying hydrogen peroxide onto the material, and then exposing the treated material to a microwave field of such strength and at such pressure that the hydrogen peroxide film on the packaging material heats up, preferably to a temperature above 100 DEG C. A device for carrying out the method comprises an elongate housing (10) defining a first region (21) and a second region (42). Means (22-25) are provided for spraying the packaging material in the first region with a fog of hydrogen peroxide and a microwave applicator (26, 27) is provided to irradiate the second region with microwaves.
