A winding up mechanism for a vehicle safety belt comprises a roller 4, biased by a spring 10 in the winding-up direction, and an inertial locking mechanism in which upon sudden changes in the vehicle velocity, the ball 15 moves from a position of rest in the centre of a cup-shaped member 13 to co-operate with a locking member 11 that moves under gravity to lock the roller against rotation in the winding-off direction. In one embodiment, the locking member 11 pivotally journalled between flanges 3, has pawls 21 that can engage ratchet teeth 7 formed on flanges 6 of the roller 4. The cup-shaped member is carried by a rod 12 and has an opening 14 at the bottom into which a projection 11a of the locking member passes to be kept in position by the ball 15 when at rest thus maintaing the locking member 11 in an inoperative position. Sudden acceleration of the vehicle causing the ball to move from rest allows the projection 11a to swing up through the opening 14 whereupon the locking member 11 swings to its locking position in which it engages the matchet teeth 7. In a modification, Fig. 6 (not shown), a U-shaped locking member (16) has its centre part resting on the upper side of the ball at rest and drops to engage the ratchet teeth when the ball is displaced. In a further modification, Fig. 7 (not shown), movement of the ball from rest allows a leg (18a) of a lever to drop thereby pivoting a second leg (18b) to engage the ratchet teeth 7. |
