Internal filter system for garden ponds, aquaria or the like, in which, as shown in section in diagram 1, different filter materials are connected in series so that the water stream first flows through a coarse material, for example gravel, and then a finely porous material, for example plastic foam. Coarse dirt particles are retained by the gravel without blocking the flow.
