Clay or clay-containing compositions are prepared for the uptake of pollutants for disposal by drawing capillary water and adhesion water from the clay aged with water or the clay-containing composition and thereby activating the surface of the clay particles for the uptake of finely divided pollutants. Seals and linings of landfills are produced using activated clay prepared in this way.
