In a process for liquefying coal, the ground coal is mixed with lubricating oil to form a slurry, fed at high pressure and high temperature into the upper region of a reaction zone, where it undergoes catalytically accelerated hydrogenation with a countercurrent of hydrogen. The product vapours are withdrawn from the upper region and the solids-containing residue from the lower region of the reaction zone. The lubricating oil for the fresh coal is preferably a liquid which is almost completely vaporized under the operating conditions prevailing in the upper region of the reaction zone. |
