[Also in Division F2] In a process for manufacturing an aluminium alloy piston having an annular coolant duct, a plurality of inwardly directed recesses are formed in the mass of the piston into which mechanical or electrical machining means are inserted to join up the recesses and form the duct, the recesses being finally sealed by segments fitted thereinto. The recesses may be machined inwardly from the piston skirt. from the crown or from the interior of the piston. The electrical means may comprise spark erosion apparatus and the segments may be welded in position if the weld is in an area not subjected to high temperature. Normally the segments are a shrink fit or may be welded when located in a zone of the piston which is not subjected to high temperature. |
