PURPOSE:To prevent a failure in forming an image by making a removal member brought into contact with an image carrier means so that residual developer and refuse of paper, etc., on the image carrier is removed while the image carrier means moves and moving the removal member which is still in contact with the image carrier means in an opposite direction so that the refuse of paper sticking to the removal member is scraped at the time of turning on a power source or at the time of completing a prescribed processing. CONSTITUTION:While the image carrier means 11 is moved in a prescribed direction by a moving means under the control of a control means 32, the removal member 41 provided in a cleaning means 30 is brought into contact with the image carrier means 11 so as to remove the developer and the refuse of paper, etc., remaining on the image carrier means 11. At the time of turning on the power source or at the time of completing the prescribed processing, the removal member 41 which is still in contact with the image carrier means 11 is moved in the direction opposite to the prescribed direction, thereby scraping the refuse of paper sticking to the removal member 41 with a frictional force caused by the above-mentioned contact. Thus, the fault of cleaning does not occur even if the refuse of paper is caused and the failure in forming the image can be prevented.
