[Also in Divisions C3 and G2] The invention includes compounds of the general Formula III wherein n is 1 or 2, R 2 is hydrogen, C 1-5 alkyl or phenyl, R 3 is hydrogen or substituted or unsubstituted alkyl or aryl, R 4 is hydrogen, hydroxyl, halogen, alkyl, substituted alkyl or aryl, X is an acid anion and Z is a thiazole, benzothiazole, naphthothiazole, thianaphtheno-7<SP>1</SP>: 6<SP>1</SP>:4:5-thiazole, oxazole, benzoxazole, naphthoxazole, selenazole, benzoselenazole, naphthoselenazole, thiazoline, quinoline, isoquinoline, pyridine, imidazole, benzimidazole, naphthimidazole, 3:3-dialkylindolenine, 1:2:4-thiadiazole, 1:2 :4-triazole or tetrazole nucleus, the compounds having molecular weights of at least 300. The compounds are made by reacting a heterocyclic amine of the formula with a compound of the general formula or with a compound of the general formula in the presence of chlorine, bromine or iodine. Specific compounds of the above general Formula III are listed and these include 1-(4-0-biphenylylphenacyl)pyridinium iodide, 4-benzyl- 1-(2-phenylphenacyl)-pyridinium bromide and 1 - (2<SP>1</SP>- hydroxy - 4<SP>1 </SP>- pentadecylphenaeyl)- pyridinium iodide.
