Heading C2U. 7 - Dihalomethyl - #<SP>4</SP> - 3 keto steroids, of which compounds of the formula (wherein R<SP>1</SP> is H or acyl; R<SP>2</SP> is H, alkyl, alkenyl, alkynyl or haloalkynyl; and R<SP>3</SP> is H or methyl) are claimed as novel, are prepared by reacting the corresponding #<SP>4</SP>-3-keto-6,7-dihalomethylene steroids (prepared by the methods described in Specification 1,163,736) with zinc or a zinc amalgam in an inert solvent. Products containing a 17-keto group may, after 3-keto protection, e.g. enol ether formation, be transformed into 17#-ols or their acylates, which may contain a 17α-hydrocarbon or -halohydrocarbon group, by standard procedures.
