PURPOSE: To efficiently purify exhaust gases from internal combustion engines by securely bonding copper oxide and cerium dioxide and making the compounding ratio of the copper oxide smaller than the ratio of the cerium dioxide, thereby forming a catalyst for purification of exhaust gases. CONSTITUTION: The cerium dioxide is impregnated by using an aq. soln. of the copper salt forming the copper oxide by decomposed by heat and thereafter, the cerium dioxide is calcined to form the copper oxide, by which the catalyst for purification of the internal combustion exhaust gases is obtd. As another process, the cerium dioxide is impregnated with the aq. soln. of the copper salt and this cerium dioxide is treated and the salt is converted to copper hydroxide or carbonate and, hereafter, the cerium dioxide is calcined to form the copper oxide. The resulted catalyst is securely bonded with the copper oxide and the cerium dioxide and the ratio of the copper oxide is smaller than the ratio of the cerium dioxide. The ratio of the copper oxide (in terms of the weight of the copper) to the cerium dioxide is adequately 0.1 to 10 wt.%. |
