<p>PURPOSE:To reduce the throughput of a reproduced vector to be collated by providing a group selector and selecting a reproduced vector group indicated by a central value closest to the characteristic value of a sample vector. CONSTITUTION:A computer 1 controls a picture reading unit 2 according to a prescribed program and stores original picture data in a picture memory 4. Thereupon, the computer 1 instructs a picture processing processor 3 to code the data. The processor 3 successively segments sample vectors from an original picture region and prepares coded data by quantizing the vectors. Further, the processor 3 divides the vectors into plural reproduced vector groups to be previously prepared and determines the central values of the characteristics of the respective reproduced vectors for the respective groups. Moreover, the processor 3 selects the reproduced vector group having the central value closest to the characteristic value of the sample vector by the group selector and further selects the reproduced vector out of the selected reproduced vector group at the time of coding the sample vector. Thus, the reproduced vectors to be collated can be limited to those for which the collation with the sample vector is selected, and the throughput can be reduced.</p> |
