METHOD OF MAINTAINING RADIATION RESISTANCE OF OPTICAL FIBER

PURPOSE:To maintain the radiation resistance of an optical fiber over a long period of time by incorporating silicon dioxide into a core to form the core and forming an org. covering material of a material which generates hydrogen or deuterium. CONSTITUTION:The core is formed by incorporating the silicon dioxide therein and the org. covering material is formed of the material which generates the hydrogen or deuterium. A slight amt. of the hydrogen or deuterium is, therefore, generated from the org. covering material over a long period of time and this hydrogen or deuterium acts to relieve the bond defects in the core generated by gamma rays. An increase in transmission loss even after the use in the environment of gamma ray irradiation over a long period of time is thereby obviated.
